Overcoming war and loss: A Birkbeck graduate's inspiring story

My name is Ahmed Ramadan, and I’m from Gaza. When the war there began, I lost several members of my family, and all our houses were destroyed. I also became seriously unwell, but through it all, I continued my studies.

The support I received from Birkbeck helped me carry on. My professors, lecturers, and the wider academic community stood by me with incredible kindness and encouragement. I’m also deeply grateful to my friend Alaia Rafea, who stayed by my side during the hardest moments.

I wish my family could be here with me to celebrate this achievement. My mother, who had always dreamed of attending my graduation, sadly passed away, and my father remains in Gaza, unable to join me. Despite everything, I completed my Master’s degree. I am proud of what I have achieved and thankful for the solidarity and support shown by Birkbeck. My journey is a message of resilience, a message that even in the face of unimaginable hardship, it is possible to succeed.
