Entry Information for students from Finland

  • ENGLISH LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS

    • The English language requirements for our courses are provided on individual course pages as minimum IELTS scores, however we accept many other tests and qualifications.
    • Please visit our English language requirements page for more information. 
  • Undergraduate Entry Requirements

    • Applicants from Finland who have completed the following can be considered for direct entry:
    • Ylioppilastutkinto/Studentexamen (Matriculation Examination) when awarded after three years of study.
    • Applicants with the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma or A-levels will be considered for direct admission to our undergraduate degree programmes. IB requirements range from 28 to 33, depending on the course.
    • Applicants who fall short of the entry requirements may also complete a Foundation course for entry onto undergraduate programmes at the university. These offer the opportunity for guaranteed progression onto Birkbeck’s Bachelor programmes.
      • A-level AAA = 144 UCAS tariff points = comparable offer L/7 (descriptors and meaning: Laudatur)
      • A-level AAB = 136 UCAS tariff points = comparable offer E/6 (descriptors and meaning: Eximia cum laude approbatur)
      • A-level ABB = 128 UCAS tariff points = comparable offer E/6 (descriptors and meaning: Eximia cum laude approbatur)
      • A-level BBB = 120 UCAS tariff points = comparable offer M/5 (descriptors and meaning: Magna cum laude approbatur)
      • A-level BBC = 112 UCAS tariff points = comparable offer C/4 (descriptors and meaning: Cum laude approbatur)
      • A-level BCC = 104 UCAS tariff points = comparable offer C/4 (descriptors and meaning: Cum laude approbatur)
      • A-level CCC = 96 UCAS tariff points = comparable offer B/3 (descriptors and meaning: Lubenter approbatur).
  • Postgraduate Entry Requirements

    • To be considered for entry onto a Master’s degree at Birkbeck, a student from Finland must have completed a Bachelor’s degree from a recognised university in Finland. Students can also be considered for entry with:
      • Bachelor’s degree/Kandidaattii/Kandidat (three years) with a minimum grade of 2/Hyva/Good (1-3 grading system), or grade 3/Hyva/Good (1-5 grading system)
      • Maisteri/Magister (five years) with a minimum grade of 2/Hyva/Good (1-3 grading system), or grade 3/Hyva/Good (1-5 grading system)
      • Lisensiaatti/licenciat (higher academic degree in Medicine, Dentistry and Veterinary Medicine)
      • Oikeustieteen Kandidaatti/Juris Kandidat
      • Ammattikorkeakoulututkinto, AMK/yrkeshögskoleexamen, YHS or Bachelor’s degree from a polytechnic (since 1996) may be considered but will depend on the course you are applying for.
    • Students applying for postgraduate courses requiring a UK 2:1 degree will need a Master’s degree with at least 3.5 out of 4.0 from a recognised university. Please note that all applications are considered on an individual basis and students may be admitted to Master's programmes with a lower-level degree if they have work experience relevant to the degree applied for.
    • If you do not meet these criteria, you can apply for OnCampus' Master's Foundation programme, which is available for two- or three-term progression onto a wide range of Master’s degrees at Birkbeck.
    • Finnish degree classification:
      • 1-5 scale: 5; 1-3 scale: 3 (alternative name (Finnish 1-3 scale): Erinomainen; alternative name (Swedish 1-3 scale): Utmärkt; English translation or equivalent: Excellent = 1st)
      • 1-5 scale: 4; 1-3 scale: 2 (alternative name (Finnish 1-3 scale): Hyvä; alternative name (Swedish 1-3 scale): God; English translation or equivalent: Good = 2:1)
      • 1-5 scale: 3; 1-3 scale: 1 (alternative name (Finnish 1-3 scale): Tyydyttävä; alternative name (Swedish 1-3 scale): Nöjaktig; English translation or equivalent: Satisfactory = 2:2).
  • Research degrees Entry Requirements

    • For entry onto our research degree courses, students should normally have a Lisensiaatti/Licentiat (pre-doctoral degree). However, schools also accept students with high grades in a Maisteri/Magister/Master’s degree (since 1996), Kandidaatti/Kandidat/Bachelor’s degree (since 2005), Lisensiaatti/licenciat, Oikeustieteen Kandidaatti/Juris Kandidat or Kandidaatti/Kandidat or professional title Ekonomi, Diplomi-insinööri, Arkkitehti, Lisensiaatti, Proviisori (before 1996).
    • Applicants are strongly urged to contact potential supervisors within the department before submitting a research application.

 

GLOBAL FUTURE SCHOLARSHIP

Discover our Global Future Master’s scholarships for postgraduate students. The scholarship will be applied as a discount to the tuition fee for the first year of your full-time master's course, to bring it in line with the Home tuition fee amount, if you are eligible. You don’t need to apply for the scholarship because it will be automatically applied by our admissions team at the time of enrolment.
