Environmental Education Collaboration Opportunities
Partnering with external organisations enrichens our students' learning experience, providing opportunities to link the knowledge and skills they have gained to real-life problems. Academic staff will work with external partners to ensure that there is a sound pedagogical rationale for these interactions, and that the learning outcomes for the module or programme stay centred within everything we do.
External organisations often wonder how they can collaborate with us on teaching and learning projects. Some of the various opportunities for collaboration have been summarised below. Collaborations can take anywhere from three to nine months to plan and develop, therefore we recommend starting the conversation early if this is of interest. Our annual Climate Festival also offers a great incubator for collaboration.
Formulate a 'live brief' in-class activity
Access the creative insights of Birkbeck students. Share a challenge, or data for students to analyse during a class period and brainstorm solutions for you.
Read about an interactive workshop we developed with Legal & General's climate team, which ran during our inaugural climate festival.
Deliver a guest lecture
Join a scheduled class session at Birkbeck's campus or in the field, and speak to students about the relevant aspects of your work.
Learn about our Critical Infrastructures for Sustainability module, which includes field trips where students have the opportunity to meet experts from the Environment Agency, Thames Barrier, Crossness Pumping Station and Battersea Power Station.
Collaborate on learning resources
Partner with our Virtual Reality and Immersive Learning (VRIL) team to create a learning resource for use at Birkbeck. For example, this could be an external site visit resource.
Watch a video from our VRIL team about opportunities to revolutionise education using innovative technology.
Formulate a 'Live Brief' Assignment
Provide a business problem, including any relevant data, for students to analyse and propose solutions as part of an assessed assignment that will contribute towards their grade.
Learn about The Consultancy Challenge module, running in partnership with PA Consulting.
Provide data for student research projects
Undergraduate and Postgraduate students complete independent research projects as part of their programme. Students design the projects themselves, but partner organisations may wish to provide real data that students can use to answer their own, original research questions.
