Governance

The Governing Body, referred to in the College as Governors, is collectively responsible for overseeing all of Birkbeck's activities.

Honorary Fellowships are awarded to individuals who have attained distinction, have rendered exceptional service to Birkbeck or have had a close association with Birkbeck.

Birkbeck's officers are responsible for the governance of the College.

Birkbeck is organised into three academic faculties and a variety of professional services departments, led by the Vice-Chancellor, Deputy Vice-Chancellor, and Pro Vice-Chancellors.

Birkbeck takes its responsibilities towards its staff and students very seriously and has formal guidelines, procedures and policies in place that you are very welcome to read.

At Birkbeck, we provide our students and other stakeholders with the information they need to understand the College’s financial position.

Under the Counter Terrorism and Security Act 2015 higher education bodies must have due regard to the need to prevent people from being drawn into terrorism.

Birkbeck has obligations under the Freedom of Information act to respond to requests from the public for information, and to produce and maintain a publications scheme.

The role of the college committees is to oversee and advise on specific areas of activity and, in certain cases, to exercise powers delegated to them by the Governing Body.

Birkbeck, University of London is an exempt charity under the terms of the Charities Act 2011.

Birkbeck maintains and develops excellence in research by providing the highest quality research training in all subject areas. We also share the results of and expertise gained from research through teaching, publication, partnerships and debate.

The Trade Union (Facility Time Publication Requirements) Regulations 2017 require the College to publish data each year on paid facility time for employees who are trade union representatives.

We are registered with the Office for Students (OfS) and submit access and participation plans that set out the College’s course quality and student support strategy.
